  • Keeping it social

Earlier this month, Abraxas Aktion Club of Poway, California, had an evening campout social. And they do mean “social.”  The Abraxas club invited members of the North County Aktion Club to the event—along with members of the Poway-Rancho Bernardo special-needs community. In all, the campout included 44 special-needs attendees and 86 friends, family and volunteers.

The idea came from Frank Kenny, a local Kiwanis club member. As a bus driver, he often talks to local students, and he found that many in the special-needs community had never been camping or fishing.  So the Abraxas Kiwanis club members teamed up to make it happen.

When the guests arrived, they were given an official San Diego Padres hat and a Lake Poway Pin to commemorate the evening. As hosts, the Abraxas Aktion Club also gave Aktion Club lanyards to members of the North County Aktion Club.

The rest of the evening was taken up with traditional camping fun: grilled hot dogs and other camp food, including ’Smores made over a charcoal grill, with plenty of games and singing.  In fact, professional musicians Aurora Bishop and Mike Slayen gave their time to attend and entertain.  (Poway High School student John Lettang led the national anthem.)

The Aktion Clubbers were particularly successful at getting the community involved. Other bus drivers from the local school district helped with fishing instructions (and donated their own supplies). Parents of Abraxas Aktion Club members donated items and volunteered, and additional members of the Kiwanis Club of Poway rolled up their sleeves. The business community chipped in too, with generous donations of money and items.

Ultimately, the campout was such a success that the Abraxas Aktion Club and the Poway Kiwanians are looking to make it an annual event.

  • Need Chaperones for TLC?

The 2017 Aktion Club Training and Leadership Conferences are coming! It’s an exciting time—and a great opportunity. But we know that there are practical matters to consider.

For example: Do you have volunteers who can help chaperone your Aktion Club’s members? Draw from your local network of volunteers and professionals! Try asking:

    · Sponsoring Kiwanis club members

    · Organizational/agency staffs

    · Caregivers/family members

As always, you want to be prepared. When you start contacting people, be sure to:

    · Have a plan. Know that you need __ volunteers to chaperone ____ members.

    · Use email, phone calls and/or flyers. When communicating, be specific about your needs. (“Can you help chaperone some of our Aktion Club members to the TLC on _______ to ________?”) For more information and updates about this year’s TLCs, check out the events page on the Aktion Club website. And if you have questions, contact Katie Griffin at kgriffin@kiwanis.org.

  • 3rd Quarter Reports Now Due

Each quarter, clubs should report on their activities through the quarterly report form for Aktion Club. This form can be found online under the Resources section. In addition, the link to this form is sent directly to all club advisors and district administrators at the end of each quarter. Completing this form is an excellent way to keep track of all of the wonderful service projects, club activities and fundraisers your club is doing. The third quarter report is now due. Please pay special attention to the additional questions that were added this month at the end of the report form. You can find the link on the Resources page or go directly to the report here

  • Aktion Club is making history

Did you know Aktion Club members have been giving back to their communities through service for 30 years? The first Aktion Club was formed in 1987 and Kiwanis and its members are very proud. This year, Aktion Club will host 2 Training and Leadership Conferences (TLCs) for members and sponsoring Kiwanis clubs. One TLC will be in the founding district of Florida (November 10-12) and the other will be in Michigan (September 15-17). The planning is well underway and both conferences promise to be fun-filled weekends full of service, learning and fellowship. Join us for one (or both!) of these commemorative events! If you cannot attend, consider sponsoring Aktion Club members’ attendance. Find out more details at:  www.aktionclub.org/tlc.
