AKTION CLUB RECEIVES SPECIAL RECOGNITION FROM U.S. CONGRESS

Greg Beasley's smile may be just a little bit bigger this week when he makes trauma dolls for kids to hold as they receive treatment at California hospitals. U.S. Rep. Jim Costa (D-Calif.) just presented Aktion Club with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition to celebrate the inaugural Aktion Club Week.

"This is a nice recognition," said Howard Jackson, Aktion Club district administrator of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District. "This is well deserved."

Beasley has been a member of Aktion Club of 12 years. Jackson has been involved just as long. He helped charter the Charis Community Aktion Club, where Beasley has been a leader and influential member.

"I like making new friends and helping the community," Beasley  said as he headed to a meeting and service project for the Kiwanis Club of East Fresno, which sponsors the Charis Community Aktion Club. The two clubs — and others in the division — have adopted a children's garden and are working to clean it up and install a "fairy garden" for kids to enjoy.

"I think it's pretty cool we got this recognition," said Jackson. "Service organizations do a lot of different things, but no group does projects and service like Aktion Clubs."

Beasley was quick to list projects his club does every year. They clean parks, make blankets for kids in the hospital, hold holiday parties, create hygiene kits for families that flee natural disasters, and even cleaned an alley to help beautify the city.

Kiwanis International created Aktion Club Week to recognize the people of all abilities who help their communities.

“Aktion Clubs are no different than Kiwanis clubs," said Stan Soderstrom, executive director of Kiwanis International. "Members learn character-building, leadership, inclusiveness and caring all while giving back to their community."

Those are lessons Beasley has put into practice. "I love it."
