  • Aktion Club leads Diaper Dump success

Ten charities. Hundreds of dollars. Thousands of diapers. One hugely successful Aktion Club project.

In March, The Aktion Club of Highlands County, Florida, led a drive to collect cash and supplies to help babies and families in need. The result: 11,083 diapers, 6,084 wipes and 14 baby blankets. A total of US$1,329.40 in cash was collected—and then used to buy more diapers and wipes from Diapers.com.

The Aktion Club kicked off the campaign on March 20, bringing nearly 7,000 diapers and more than US$300 to its club meeting. Then came Diaper Dump Day. On March 29, 15 club members collected cash in milk-jug canisters alongside U.S. 27. Joined by a club advisor and four volunteers from local charities, they collected US$994.13, more than 3,000 diapers—and those 14 blankets. A tent off of the roadside served as the "diaper dump" location, attracting generous donors such as the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, which made a huge donation.

Ultimately, the Aktion Club of Highlands County served its community by assisting 10 local organizations. Eight different children’s charities received diapers, wipes and blankets, while two others received a total of more than 1,200 adult diapers.

  • Aktion Club Training and Leadership Conference: Cancelled

A little bit of sad news: After a lot of thought and discussion, the 2014 Aktion Club TLC has been cancelled. Due to low registration, the event will not take place this year—but we'll consider ways to make next year's event fun and informative for Aktion Club members.

In fact, this year's cancellation is an opportunity to keep thinking about the TLC—including the factors that make it a great opportunity and an accessible event for all members. If you have questions or comments about the cancellation, contact Katie Griffin at kgriffin@kiwanis.org.

  • AKTION CLUB HELPING CHILDREN

Working together to make the world a better place. This is what Aktion Club members are striving to do one project at a time. Aktion Club members have united together in an effort to support an international service initiative. The focus of the Aktion Club service initiative is Sleeping Children Around the World, a nonprofit organization located in Toronto, Ontario.

The mission of SCAW is to provide bed kits to children in need throughout the developing world. This is carried out through free-will donations and partnerships with volunteers around the globe. A bed kit donation of US $35 provides a mat or mattress, pillow, sheet, blanket, mosquito net (if applicable), clothes, towel and school supplies.

Kiwanis family members are asked to support this initiative by making monetary donations to Aktion Clubs for Sleeping Children Around the World. For more information, check out the Aktion Club web page

  • NEW MEMBER MATERIALS - AND MORE!

Aktion Club is one of the fastest-growing programs in the Kiwanis family. It’s time for your annual materials to grow along with it. This fall, look for new print pieces both for members and advisors.

The member handbook is being updated to become a more useful resource throughout the 2014–2015 year. For instance, the handbook will contain more information and guidelines—from how-to tips on service projects to contest information, a program calendar and much more.

The advisor handbook will also be created as a resource to assist advisors in making Aktion Club successful.

And each of these materials will have a new look—thanks to the new Aktion Club branding, including the program’s new logo! Keep an eye on future communications regarding Aktion Club’s new “look and feel.”
