  • KINDNESS MATTERS

Kindness is a behavior marked by ethical characteristics, a pleasant disposition, and concern and consideration for others. It’s considered a virtue and it’s recognized as a value in many cultures and religions. Here are some random acts of kindness that Aktion Club members could do this month . . . just because.

    • Smile at everyone you see. It might be all they need to turn their day around.
    • Try to make sure all members of the club feel included.
    • Call a friend you haven’t seen in a long time just to say hello.
    • Compliment someone in front of others.
    • Do the dishes when it’s not your turn.
    • Dog-sit for free.
    • Make a thank-you card for your advisor or friend.
    • Pick a bouquet of flowers from your garden and give it to a neighbor.
    • Offer to help someone struggling with grocery bags.
    • Post only encouraging comments on social media.

  • MEMBERS CATCH A WAVE WITH FIRST DUDE’S FUNDRAISER

It began as an initiative to raise about US$5,000. As of July, it has resulted in more than $25,000 in the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Kiwanis International.

It’s due to the generosity of Kiwanians — and the leadership of Governor Joni Ackerman and the district’s “First Dude,” Greg Ronkainen. In Cal-Nev-Ha, it’s an annual tradition for the district governor’s spouse to have his or her own initiative. Greg, Joni’s husband and a longtime Kiwanian and Aktion Club advisor, decided to focus on Aktion Club. He initiated “Call to Aktion, Catch the Wave” as a fundraiser to help members get to their district’s convention at a weekend camp in Wonder Valley, California. Funds would also pay for Circle K members to attend as advisors—and more generally, to help organize more Aktion Clubs in the district.

With the help of the Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation, a Kiwanis-club banner patch and a pin were designed, and grant amounts were set up. First, it was established that individual Aktion Club members could apply for a US$75 grant to help attend camp. Second, a limited number of Circle K members could apply for $150 grants to attend as advisors. Third, a grant of $400 would help pay the charter fee for any new Aktion Club.

Every weekend for nearly six months, Greg traveled to the district’s Kiwanis clubs for presentations and to sell banner patches and pins. Aktion Clubs pitched in by selling pins too. (Kiwanians could also order them directly through the district foundation.)

This month, the First Dude found out how immense the program’s success has been. Thanks to the $25,000 raised so far — with more than two months to go — everyone can get a grant to attend the district convention. The district can also fund six Circle K members as camp/convention advisors.

With such success, the district can also help charter six new Aktion Clubs. Congratulations and thanks to the First Dude for his commitment and generosity — and to all Kiwanians and Aktion Club members in the district for helping our program grow!
