disABILITY AWARENESS PROGRAM - NEW INITIATIVE

Working together to make the world a better place. This is what Aktion Club members are striving to do one project at a time. Aktion Club members have united together in an effort to support an international Service Initiative.
The focus of the Aktion Club Service Initiative is disability awareness. Kiwanis International and the Joseph Maley Foundation (JMF) co-created this program for Aktion Club. JMF has been conducting disability awareness for more than 18 years and are considered to be experts in this field. By working together, a new program created specifically for Aktion Club was developed.
The premise of the program is:
  • We are all unique. We have different talents and struggles, hopes and dreams.
  • We all want to be accepted, to enjoy friendships, to work and to play.
  • Every person deserves respect and to be treated with kindness.
  • It is important to celebrate similarities and differences.
  • We must get to know someone to really understand them.

This program fulfills the missions of both Kiwanis International and Aktion Club.

  • Kiwanis mission: Serving the children of the world.
  • Aktion Club mission: Members will develop initiative, leadership skills and serve the community.

Program logistics

  • An Aktion Club will request the program kit from Kiwanis International by completing this form: https://Kiwanis.formstack.com/forms/disability_awareness_program_kit_request.
  • The kit will be mailed to the Aktion Club's sponsoring Kiwanis club.
  • This will be the club's service initiative for the year.
  • The club will implement program with their local elementary school.
  • When visiting the classrooms, club advisors and members will use the program activities with the students.
  • Clubs are encouraged to work with the same schools each year to build a foundation of awareness and acceptance in the students.

Program content

The curriculum is designed for students aged preschool through 2nd grade. Each kit will contain:

  • A facilitator's guide
  • Disability awareness activities
  • Books (one per grade level)
  • Teacher resources
  • Parent information

The disABILITY Awareness Program Kit #1 will be available in the latter part of 2018. Additional kits may be available for older students in the coming year.

Sleeping Children Around the World

Working together to make the world a better place. This is what Aktion Club members are striving to do one project at a time. Aktion Club members have united together in an effort to support an international Service Initiative.

The focus of the Aktion Club Service Initiative is Sleeping Children Around the World, a nonprofit organization located in Toronto, Ontario.

The mission of SCAW is to provide bed kits to children in need throughout the developing world. This is carried out through free-will donations and partnerships with volunteers around the globe. A bed kit donation of $35 provides a mat or mattress, pillow, sheet, blanket, mosquito net (if applicable), clothes outfit, towel and school supplies.

Guiding Principles of SCAW

Guiding principles are at the very core of our organization.  We operate under this blanket of core values, which guides our direction and our mission, and keeps everyone on the same journey.

AT SLEEPING CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD:

  • We believe that it is the basic right of every child to have a comfortable night's sleep
  • 100% of all bedkit donations go directly to its contents.  No portion is used to pay for operating expenses
  • We provide hope and joy and aim to preserve the dignity of each child we help
  • We verify that each bedkit is received by a child in need
  • All donations are of "free will" giving.  We will not undertake telemarketing, door to door appeals, mass mailings or use professional fundraisers to help our cause
Kiwanis family members are asked to support this initiative by making monetary donations from Aktion Clubs to Sleeping Children Around the World.
