New disABILITY Awareness Program

Working together to make the world a better place. This is what Aktion Club members are striving to do one project at a time. Aktion Club members have united together in an effort to support an international Service Initiative.

The focus of the Aktion Club Service Initiative is disability awareness. Kiwanis International and the Joseph Maley Foundation (JMF) co-created this program for Aktion Club. JMF has been conducting disability awareness for more than 18 years and are considered to be experts in this field. By working together, a new program created specifically for Aktion Club was developed.

The premise of the program is:

    • We are all unique. We have different talents and struggles, hopes and dreams.
    • We all want to be accepted, to enjoy friendships, to work and to play.
    • Every person deserves respect and to be treated with kindness.
    • It is important to celebrate similarities and differences.
    • We must get to know someone to really understand them.

This program fulfills the missions of both Kiwanis International and Aktion Club.

  • Kiwanis mission: Serving the children of the world.
  • Aktion Club mission: Members will develop initiative, leadership skills and serve the community.

Program logistics

  • An Aktion Club will purchase the program from Kiwanis International. This will be the club's service initiative for the year.
  • The club will implement program kit with their local elementary school.
  • When visiting the classrooms, club advisors and members will use the program activities with the students.
  • Clubs are encouraged to work with the same schools each year to build a foundation of awareness and acceptance in the students.

Program content

There will be a total of three kits created covering content for students aging from preschool through 8th grade. The first kit will have curriculum for preschool through 2nd grade and will be the first kit available in summer, 2018. Kits 2 and 3 are in progress. All program materials are based off academic standards. Each kit will contain:

  • A facilitator's guide
  • Disability awareness activities
  • Books (one per grade level)
  • Teacher resources
  • Parent information
  • Resource list

The disABILITY Awareness Program Kit #1 will launch at the Kiwanis International Convention and Aktion Club Training and Leadership Conference in June, 2018. Kits #2 and #3 will be coming soon!

Sleeping Children Around the World

Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW), is a nonprofit organization located in Toronto, Ontario. SCAW has been a  project for Aktion Club since 2005, and Aktion Club continues to promote SCAW as a fundraising initiative for clubs to support.

The mission of SCAW is to provide bed kits to children in need throughout the developing world. This is carried out through free-will donations and partnerships with volunteers around the globe. A bed kit donation of $37 provides a mat or mattress, pillow, sheet, blanket, mosquito net (if applicable), clothes outfit, towel and school supplies.

Kiwanis family members are asked to support this initiative by making monetary donations to Aktion Clubs for Sleeping Children Around the World.
