FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How do I join?
Membership is open to any adult living with a disability who desires to become a leader in his/her community and wishes to provide service to others. Each Aktion Club is sponsored by a Kiwanis club. Contact your local Kiwanis club to see if there is an Aktion Club in your area.

2. How do I find a Kiwanis club in my area?
If you are looking for a Kiwanis club in your area, go to the Kiwanis website and use our Club locator.

3. How do members benefit?
Aktion Club provides an opportunity to build leadership and decision-making skills, as well as hold leadership roles in the club. Members experience meaningful community-service activities. They learn by doing. They learn organization, teamwork and leadership. But the most important lesson they learn is that individuals working together can and do make a difference to the world around them.

4. Who sponsors an Aktion Club?
Aktion Club is a Service Leadership Program of Kiwanis International, a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis clubs sponsor Aktion Clubs. Kiwanis members recognize that individuals with disabilities want to take an active role in solving problems and meeting needs of the world around them. One important way Kiwanis clubs serve their local communities is by sponsoring and supporting service organizations for young people. These programs include K-Kids clubs in elementary schools, Builders Clubs in middle schools, Key Clubs in high schools, and Circle K International in colleges and universities.

The Kiwanis club forms the Aktion Club by enlisting interest from a supporting organization, and then underwrites costs and provides adult guidance in concert with organization’s personnel. Key Clubs and CKI clubs often get involved with the Aktion Club, providing excellent role models. Sponsorship by Kiwanis, Key Club and CKI is a winning combination because the ideals of voluntary service are shown by example.

5. What can an Aktion Club do?
Whether the club is involved in a small project at a community site or is working with a Kiwanis club, Key Club or CKI club on a larger project, Aktion Clubs can make their presence known.

Some Aktion Clubs:

  • Conduct fundraisers such as car washes, paper drives and recycling projects to raise money for needs in the community.
  • Perform community services, such as environmental projects, park beautification, food drives or nursing home visitations.
  • Organize canned food and clothing drives to support local shelters.
  • Make cards for sick children in the hospital.
  • Assist Kiwanis clubs, CKI and Key Clubs with their service initiatives.
  • Take time out for fun! Aktion Club members visit zoos, museums, sporting events, among many other activities. They play as hard as they work.
If there’s an Aktion Club in your town, you can find its members anywhere there’s service to be rendered or fun to be had.
